BBC: IDF Snipers Targeting Children

A BBC World Service investigation has documented more than 168 cases of Palestinian children shot by Israeli forces in Gaza since October 2023. In 95 of those cases — more than half — the child was shot in the head or chest. Most of the victims were under 12 years old.

The investigation, led by BBC journalist Stephanie Hegarty, gathered eyewitness testimony in 59 instances. In 57 of those cases, witnesses attributed the shooting directly to the Israeli military. The cases span from the opening weeks of the conflict through July 2025.

What makes these findings devastating is not just the scale but the pattern. Children were not caught in crossfire. Many were shot while playing outside their tents in designated humanitarian zones. Others were killed in areas the IDF itself had marked as safe evacuation corridors.

The documentary centers on the stories of two-year-old Layan al-Majdalawi and six-year-old Mira Tanboura, both killed in separate incidents in November 2023, in areas where the IDF was actively operating.

Foreign doctors who served in Gaza hospitals have independently corroborated the pattern. In testimonies collected by the Dutch daily Volkskrant, 15 out of 17 doctors described encountering children under 15 with single bullet wounds to the head or chest, identifying 114 such cases during their medical missions.

Forensic pathologists consulted by Volkskrant reviewed X-rays and CT scans from these cases. Their conclusion: the wounds were consistent with long-range sniper or drone fire, not shrapnel from explosions. These are precision shots — not collateral damage.

Dr. Mark Perlmutter, an American orthopedic surgeon who volunteered in Gaza, told CBS News: "I have two children the age of children I was seeing daily. No child, no child, should have a sniper bullet in their body."

According to the UN, more than 17,000 children have been killed in Gaza since October 2023. The BBC investigation focuses on a specific subset — children killed by direct gunfire rather than airstrikes or shelling — because the precision of sniper fire suggests intentional targeting rather than indiscriminate bombardment.

Defense for Children International - Palestine (DCIP) has documented similar patterns, noting that Israeli snipers have repeatedly targeted children in areas with no active fighting.

The IDF has disputed these findings. A spokesperson told CBS: "The IDF has never, and will never, deliberately target children. Remaining in an active combat zone has inherent risks."

However, the BBC investigation specifically documented cases in humanitarian safe zones and IDF-designated evacuation corridors — areas that should not be active combat zones.

When a military force shoots children in the head with precision weapons in zones it designated as safe, this is not collateral damage. The forensic evidence, the eyewitness testimony, the medical records, and the sheer pattern of head and chest shots in children under 12 point to systematicLoaded Language targeting.
